"At the actual time of performance, the musician does not calculate the procedures that will guide his playing. Rather he plays from a level of consciousness somewhat removed from the purely rational... [performing] intuitively, wherein the dictates of traditional procedures are integrated with his immediate mood and emotional needs." Picking up where Derek Bailey's words leave off, this system for improvisation uses real-time EEG brainwave data sampling to tap into the performer's physiological state during performance in order to create music that is closely linked to one's musical intuition. Depending on the level of involvement, the performer's outgoing sound is manipulated in a variety of ways, such as location, speed and direction of the sound in a multi-channel speaker configuration. Never a static signal, the result is an ever-changing mix of synesthesia and cogno-musical feedback loops. At the heart of the system lies an interface for implicitly controlling sound by the shared experience of musical communication. |
